The Tuticorin Chamber which was subsequently rechristened as the Tuticorin Chamber of Commerce and Industry was incepted by its original name on 24 – 11 – 1906 under the chairmanship of M.J. Milligan and Co. The rechristening of the name by adding the word Industry was done in the year 1966. The founding members were numerically 12 and all of them were European Companies including South Indian Railways. G. Zellivegar was the first Honorary Secretary.A Street in Tuticorin is still known as G, Zelliveger Street is there and his last lived bunglow is in T.R. Naidu Street. Since the Chamber was controlled by Europeans they did not admit Indian merchants as members. It is interesting to know that in one of the meetings of the Chamber held on 24/2/1908 there was a resolution passed calling upon the then Madras Government to take action against Subramania Siva the patriot and against his supporter V.O. Chidambaram Pillai his co-patriot for the alleged seditious speeches made at the Tuticorin beach meeting. There has been a resolution passed urging the Goverment for the development of the Tuticorin Port in the meeting held on 10/12/1906. The Indian firms and companies were allowed entry in the year 1947 during the Indian Independence year. Our membership has grown from 12 to 26 in all these 100 years keeping the quality and service to the merchant community and public at large without crowding the membership. We would like to slightly enlarge our membership and peg it to 50 as there is a growing pressure for membership from merchants, traders, Industrialists besides trade and commerce assisting free professionals.
